The Perils of Love: Art Song from Scarlatti to Ravel
Karina Gauvin, a star of the opera world regularly featured on major international stages from Paris to Milan to Tokyo, presents an intimate selection of art songs for soprano and piano. This program showcases poetry set to music in profound and intricate ways. Unlike operatic arias, these songs are meant for smaller, more personal settings with intense focus on poetry's meaning and musical expression. Pianist Michael McMahon serves as Gauvin's ideal duo partner. The program spans from early Baroque through Mozart, continuing with tragic undertones of Gustav Mahler and masterfully crafted French mélodies by Bizet, Ravel, and Massenet. Themes include love, loss, passion, life's struggles, and nature's quiet joys. Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes.
