Artist
James EhnesLegend of the violin world, James Ehnes has established himself as one of the most sought-after musicians on the international stage. He is gifted with stunning virtuosity, serene lyricism, and unfaltering musicality. He is a Member of the Order of Canada and the Order of Manitoba, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and a visiting professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He plays the 'Marsick' Stradivarius of 1715.

James Ehnes's 50th Birthday Tour program opens the Cecilian Chamber Series season. James Ehnes is a legend of the violin world and one of Canada's great musical prides. He performs with his long-time duo pianist, Andrew Armstrong, presenting a tour de force program. The concert begins with the 'Suite in the Olden Style' by Norwegian composer Christian Sinding, incorporating Baroque influences within a fiery Romantic spirit. This is followed by Brahms's long-loved third sonata for violin and piano, which draws the listener into a deeply personal and dramatic journey combining inward searching and outward bursts of passion. The second half features an exciting new commission by Carmen Braden, a Yellowknife-based composer whose music draws inspiration from northern sounds, and Bartók's First Rhapsody celebrating bold Hungarian folk music. A spontaneous selection of favorite encores will conclude the program. Seating is assigned. Single tickets go on sale August 15, 2026.
